Ecstatic Equinox: A Day to Meet in the Middle
Twice a year, day and night come remarkably close to equal length. The autumn equinox marks the transition from summer into fall, and for a brief moment, light and darkness meet somewhere near the middle. Which got us thinking about balance. We talk about balance constantly in yoga, usually while standing on one leg and trying not to fall over. But actual balance isn’t about finding one perfect position and staying there. Watch someone standing in Vrksasana and you’ll see it happening in real time. The foot shifts, the ankle responds, muscles engage and release. The body is constantly making tiny corrections. Balance is movement.
The equinox works much the same way. It reaches this beautiful meeting point and then immediately keeps going. Days get shorter, temperatures change and the season moves forward. Nothing holds perfectly still just because, for a moment, things lined up. We spend a lot of energy trying to get life “balanced,” as though eventually we’ll arrange work, relationships, bodies, sleep, responsibilities and everything else into the perfect configuration and finally get to exhale. Then something changes, because something always changes, and suddenly we think we’ve lost our balance. Maybe we haven’t. Maybe balance has less to do with keeping everything even and more to do with our ability to adjust when it isn’t.
That’s the idea behind our Ecstatic Equinox celebration at Zen + Tonic on September 22. We’re spending the day exploring balance through strength, accessibility, meditation, mantra, somatic movement, sound and stillness. We’ll begin at 9:00am with Liquid Sculpt with Lindsey, using strength, intentional movement, balance and breath to explore stability while the body is in motion. At 10:30am, Camren leads Chair Yoga, adapting movement and mobility with the support of a chair and reminding us that a practice doesn’t need to look a particular way to be meaningful.
In the evening, we turn some of that attention inward. At 5:30pm, Camren leads The Light Inside, a one-hour Kundalini-inspired chakra activation combining guided meditation, mantra and movement. It’s an opportunity to explore breath, sound, energy and awareness without needing to fix anything or arrive anywhere in particular. Then at 7:00pm, Tori + AnnaMaria close the day with Ecstatic Equinox, beginning with one hour of somatic movement. There’s no choreography to nail and no concern for what the movement looks like from the outside. The invitation is to follow sensation, curiosity and instinct, allowing the body to lead. After an hour of movement, we’ll transition into a 30-minute sound bath, shifting from expression into stillness and giving the whole experience a chance to settle.
Maybe that’s what we like most about the equinox. It doesn’t ask light to win over darkness or darkness to disappear. For one brief moment, there’s room for both, and then everything keeps moving. Strength and softness, effort and rest, movement and stillness can belong to the same practice too. Balance doesn’t have to mean finally getting everything perfectly arranged and keeping it there. Maybe it’s simply becoming a little more comfortable adjusting as things inevitably shift.
Come for one class or spend the day with us. We’ll meet you somewhere in the middle.
